Oh hi again…

So as I’m sure most of you are aware, my server was hit hard by a virus about 4 or 5 months ago. It was not a fun experience. After a weekend of torturous coding and investigating, we thought we had it fixed. Sure enough, it found its way back to all of the websites on my server.

The majority of what I host on that server falls under the GameNation brand (GameNation, GoW Nation, Halo Nation, etc.), but I also hosted many other things, such as: my personal site (this domain), a website for my dad’s company, a couple of blogs for friends and family, and a couple of other small sites. GN took up about 75% of the server though since there was such a massive user base, along side plenty of content.

When the virus found it’s way back to GN, it found it’s way back to everything. This site, GN, and all of the sites were hit hard. Zach (head of GN) and I found ourselves fighting an uphill battle with the site for months. The server company couldn’t really do anything, and we could only patch it temporarily, and it is only a matter of time before it finds it’s way back in there each time.

That’s why I have moved my personal site (the one you’re reading this on right now), back to a shared host. I don’t hardly host anything here other than text, so I don’t need like hundreds of GB of bandwidth and memory to make this site run, like I needed with GN and company.

Basically, I wanted to have a platform to use should the virus come back and strike viciously like it did this week. Every site on my network got a 500 Internal Server Error, and Zach and I had to jump in and do way too much work to get it going again. Usually when the server would go down, either for scheduled maintenance or for another virus attack, I would try to post something on my personal blog to let people know what was up. Well that didn’t work when….my blog was on the same server!

So this is separate now, and hopefully will stay up forever. You will notice it’s not customized at all, but that will come this weekend. I figure I can use this as an excuse to completely redesign things now that I have a new home.

I hope things here continue to work well, and if the big server ever goes down (for GN and it’s sites, or anything else on it), you can check out this site and hopefully see what the problem is, and an ETA on when we can get it back up. We still don’t really know what the issue is, but we are still working on it. We think it has something to do with the code of the theme we have, and we can’t pinpoint it. We might have to go for a complete redesign to get around it, who knows.

I also did this since I use this domain as a portfolio and blog for myself day in and day out as well so I need this site to be up 100% of the time for that. So…enjoy that as well.
