High School Predictions – Week 9

Not to brag or anything, but I went a perfect 11-0 last week in my high school picks. Once the rain finally stopped and a good chunk of the games finished on Saturday afternoon, my record was left unblemished.

Week 1: 1-4
Week 2: 7-4
Week 3: 8-3
Week 4: 9-2
Week 5: 7-4
Week 6: 5-4
Week 7: 8-4
Week 8: 11-0

Total: 56-25

This week will help clear up a lot of playoff races. Last week saw many teams lock themselves into the playoffs, and some teams lock themselves into a #1 seed and a region championship. In Birmingham, Homewood and Hoover and essentially locked up their regions. Clay-Chalkville isn’t out of the woods yet, but other spots are still up for grabs. Let’s look at this week’s games.

In 6A Region 5, Homewood can add insult to injury with their top spot in the region with a win. Hueytown is all but out after a disappointing loss to Jackson-Olin on Monday, and it won’t help having to play two games in 5 days. If the Golden Gophers can pull out a win though, it will give them some serious help in the tiebreak department should it come to that. Unfortunately, it looks like they are done for good. Briarwood and Minor are playing for third place at this point in time. Walker is set in second as long as they win out after wins over both teams, and their only losses are to Homewood and Pelham. Jackson-Olin is still alive, and a win over Walker would put the Mustangs into a tie for second in the region.

In 6A Region 6, Clay-Chalkville can win the region by winning out. Gardendale will have to beat Clay-Chalkville if they want to win the region, as that will force a three way tie with them and Shades Valley.

In 7A Region 3, Hoover has all but locked in the top spot. They would have to lose to both Vestavia AND Hewitt-Trussville. Oak Mountain is holding on the second and Mountain Brook is in third. There is a four way tie right now for 4th place, and that should clear up this weekend. If there are upsets in this region this week, all hell will break loose in the standings.

Week Nine

Homewood at Hueytown
Vestavia at Hoover
Thompson at Tuscaloosa County
Chelsea at Pell City
Oak Mountain at Spain Park
Hewitt-Trussville at Mountain Brook
Briarwood at Minor
Woodlawn at Clay-Chalkville
Fort Payne at Gardendale
John Carroll at Pelham

The AHSAA Game of the Week is one I would have picked anyway, with Briarwood traveling to Minor to fight for their spot in the playoffs. A win for either of these teams will make it 100% that they get in.
