Coaching changes and latest updates

As if rivalry weekend wasn’t crazy enough, Sunday was perhaps one of the oddest days in coaching hiring and firing that we’ve ever seen. Greg Schiano was hired, then not hired at Tennessee thanks to a social media mob demolishing Tennessee AD John Currie for even thinking about hiring the Ohio State DC and former Rutgers coach.

Now that we are past that whole debacle, here is who has and hasn’t been hired, along with the latest rumors.

Latest News/Rumors

Arkansas – Gus Malzahn said that he wants to be the coach at Auburn, but some sources are saying that Arkansas could potentially offer “life-changing” money to Malzahn. A source also said that Steven Leath would handle any contract negotiations with Malzahn, not Jay Jacobs, although Jacobs is still the AD.

UCF – With the news of Scott Frost leaving, UCF is now looking for a head coach. Sources say that Kevin Sumlin is the top target for them.

Nebraska – Nebraska has officially announced the hiring of Scott Frost. Frost will stay with UCF through the Peach Bowl against Auburn on January 1 according to UCF AD Danny White.

Tennessee – Apparently the Mike Leach rumors weren’t exactly true. Instead, John Currie has been ousted as AD and former Vol coach Phil Fulmer has been named AD and will start the search himself for a new head coach.

Tennessee – NC State head coach Dave Doeren has turned down Tennessee, so now Mark Sclabach is reporting that they plan on talking with Kevin Sumlin about the opening. However, reports from Thursday night show that Mike Leach is expected to make a deal to become the next head coach at Tennessee.

Texas A&M – The Houston Chronicle reported that A&M is believed to be planning to pay about $7.5 million annually to Jimbo Fisher and that official news on a decision could come as soon as Thursday, 11/30. Florida State has a game this weekend against Louisiana-Monroe in a make up from the hurricane earlier this season. If FSU wins, they will become bowl eligible.

Mississippi State – Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead will be the new head coach at Mississippi State according to Brett McMurphy. He was at Penn State for two years, and his only head coaching experience came at Fordham (FCS) where he went 38-13 in four seasons, winning one conference championship and making the playoffs three out of those four years.

Tennessee – So much for Mike Gundy. The Mullet tweeted out that he’s a Cowboy for life and is no longer considered for the job. One name that has surfaced as of Tuesday night for Tennessee is Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Steele has been a head coach once, coaching Baylor from 1999-2002 where he went 9-36 overall.

Arizona State – It seems like former NFL head coach Herm Edwards is a candidate for the Arizona State job. Edwards hasn’t coached since 2008 and was only a college coach as an assistant at San Jose State from 1987-1989. Edwards is currently an analyst for ESPN.

Tennessee – Reports are surfacing that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is interviewing with Tennessee. He is required to notify Oklahoma State of his intention to speak with other schools, and has done that. David Cutcliffe was reached out to, but he turned it down according to ESPN’s Chris Low. Bruce Feldman noted that Tennessee is also looking at Purdue’s Jeff Brohm. NC State’s Dave Doeren, and USC OC Tee Martin. Mark Schlabach says they are looking at Auburn DC Kevin Steele as well.

Mississippi State – Seems as if the Bulldogs are looking in a few different directions. The biggest name I’m hearing is Jeremy Pruitt, and he has interviewed. Penn state OC Joe Moorhead is also considered a strong candidate according to Bruce Feldman and Dan Wolken. Tampa Bay Bucs OC Todd Monken has been reached out to as well, but it looks like he will stay in Tampa.

Arkansas – The Razorbacks need a new athletic director before they hire a coach. Since Auburn won and the whole Gus Malzahn story has died down, the new AD will be a first priority, then maybe next week start on a new head coach.

Ole Miss – Matt Luke has officially been hired, and his contract is a four-year deal that will pay him $3 million next year and is worth $12.6 million total. He has $5.1 million for assistants and $2.1 million for off-field staff.

Florida – Dan Mullen has been named head coach. No surprise there. He went 69-46 in nine seasons at Mississippi State. He was Florida’s OC for four years, winning two national championships. His contract is a six-year deal worth about $6 million a year according to The Gainesville Sun.
